Why Fitness Testing

Why Get Tested?

To set training zones:

You will get your heart rate at max and at anaerobic threshold.  This can be an invaluable tool to set your training zones, and is much more accurate then setting training zones by your max HR.    You will be given your personalized training zones based on your individual physiological characteristics.    Your zones will be given in accordance with popular literature by Joe Friel and Charmichael Training Systems.

To identify your weaknesses/limiters:

Testing can help you identify the limiters that are holding back your performance.  How high was your max?  How high was your AT as a percentage of your max?  How was your anaerobic endurance?

To monitor your progress:

Is you training program really working?  Max testing can let you know for sure.  With a proper training program, anaerobic threshold, and max wattage should go up.  Your heart rate at any given wattage should go down.  With repeated testing, you will know for sure how well your training plan is working.

To reset your training zones:

Because of the physiological changes outlined above, you will get maximal benefits from repeated testing.  Repeated testing will allow you to reset your training zones according to your new level of fitness.

Satisfy your curiosity:

Haven’t you always wanted to know your max?   Are you meeting your true potential?  Along with your max, you will be given the max of several pro athletes so you can see how you measure up.  You can also compare yourself to your friends or teammates that get tested, and see who has the highest max.   A cyclist asking, “ What’s your max? “  Is the equivalent of a weightlifter asking,  “ How much ya bench?”  Don’t you want to know your max?
