Racing Tactics for Cyclists is in my opinion
the best racing tactics book out there, and is required reading
for all of my coached athletes. All racers of all levels can learn
from this book. Even if you don't learn anything completely novel
, Thomas Prehn suggests interesting ways of viewing and reacting
to race situations.
Smart Cycling by Arnie Baker is an excellent book for beginner
riders and racers. This book is also required reading for all my
coached athletes who are new to racing or have only raced for a few
years. That being said, even an experienced racer can pluck a few
gems from this book.
Performance
Cycling by David Morse does an excellent job of of explaining the basic concepts
of training for racing, including the physiological changes that occur
while exercising and training. All of the information in
this book is scientifically sound, and well researched.
High Performance cycling by Asker Jeukendreup is for all of you science
geeks out there. This book is written in a scientific style and
parts of it may be difficult to understand if you haven't taken at
least basic biology and basic physics. This is not a book you'll
read cover to cover, but rather one you'll reference when you are curious
about a particular subject.
High tech cycling is very similar to High Performance
Cycling. Editor Ed Burke gathers experts in many scientific fields
related to cycling. Each expert or group of experts has
their own chapter to scientifically explain things such as body
size and cycling, biomechanics, optimal cadence, nutrition, and cycling
equipment.
Greg Lemond's Complete Book of Cycling. This book really helps you
get some historical perspective on these other books. It's a
classic!
It' Not About The Bike: My Journey Back to Life by Lance Armstrong and
Sally Jenkins, is about Lance Armstrong, his cancer struggle, and life
afterwards. It is an easy read and can be finished in a weekend.
Rough
ride by Paul Kimmage Chronicles one of the first irish racer in the
European Peloton and his struggle to avoid doping. This book is
very pertinent considering some of the recent goings on in cycling.
